indonesia Earthquake

London

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck northern Lombok, about 52 km away from the provincial capital Mataram, on 5 August. Badly affected areas include North and East Lombok regencies, Gili Islands and Mataram. Multiple aftershocks continue to occur. Defer non-essential travel to North Lombok and East Lombok regencies (West Nusa Tenggara province), Gili islands, and Mataram. However travel to Bali, and other parts of Lombok can continue.

Irene Lai, Medical Director, Corporate Information and Analysis at International SOS, commented, "There are reports of damage to infrastructure and there is an ongoing risk from further aftershocks.  Travellers should be aware that there is increased risk of disease outbreaks, including mosquito borne disease and from contaminated food and water.  Organisations should make sure they locate their personnel in the area and have access to up to date information.  Medical facilities may be overwhelmed and transportation issues may further cause delay to any medical attention required. Travellers already on Bali need to remain flexible in their itineraries and follow the advice of the local authorities."

International SOS members should contact the Assistance Centre for support or pre-travel briefing covering safety preparations and the support required to ensure a trip is feasible.
